Soon we’ll be found by Sia

I often consider myself to be someone who could hold a conversation with almost anyone - now this doesn’t mean it’d be a good conversation, but a bit of banter at least. However, I have a school friend who became deaf at a young age and only for her efforts to hold a conversation with me via her notepad, I probably wouldn’t have tried to communicate with her, except for the odd smile now and again. I wasn’t being rude but I simply didn’t know how to. She didn’t expect any of us to learn sign-language and so we didnt! How shameful! Despite my lack of efforts, I have always been amazed by sign-language and I did want to learn it in school but never “got the chance to”!

After watching the beautiful dance and choreography in this video, I’ve decided I WILL begin learning sign-language before the year is out - call it a mid-year resolution! This music video is truly inspirational and really illustrates the beauty of non-oral communication!

Women in Enterprise

One would imagine the issue of discrimination against women in the workplace to be a thing of the past. However, I soon realised at the recent EYP London “Women in Enterprise” event, hosted at the Apple headquarters, that this unfortunately isn’t the case. Despite this realisation, the seminar was intensely motivational and addressed other issues such as the importance of networking and support groups and the impact women have had on the economic structure.

Leading ladies Angela Eagle (MP), Sally Russell (Netmums), Priya Lakhami (Masala Masala), Maxine Benson (Everywoman), Brenda Joseph (Apple), Catherine Bennett (Apple) and Marilise Saghbini (Make Your Mark) spread their infectious positive energy like wildfire and inspired us with their stories and experiences in sectors ranging from politics to consulting to consumer goods.

The “Women in Enterprise” seminar opened with Her Majesty’s Minister of State for Pensions and the Ageing Society, Angela Eagle, who highlighted the importance of networks and events like those organised by SANDBOX and EYP London, which encourage women to bring their unique knowledge and experience to the forefront of our economy by creating enterprising businesses.

Angela Eagle’s persistence to rise above the gender and sexual orientation discrimination which she is regularly susceptible to is particularly admirable. She assured us that, the British Government is working towards closing the women’s enterprise gap and enforcing equality acts so this potential and entrepreneurial spirit that lies untapped by the economy can emerge and excel. Inevitably, unwritten and unspoken assumptions exist concerning women in the workplace i.e. when will they get married, settle down and have kids. As Angela so adamantly exclaimed, does this mean we should walk around with a sign saying “my ovaries are tied”, just to eradicate such assumptions? Of course not, but these “glass ceilings” do still exist and it is up to us, to support eachother and utilise our networks in order to break through them. “The more networks you have the stronger you are!”

This event highlighted the strong support networks that exist within the U.K, not just for aspiring women but for all aspiring entrepreneurs. Maxine Benson of Everywoman, a free resource for women starting or growing a business, spoke about the importance of having a diverse network of people to acquire a
refreshing pool of knowledge and tips from all angles. She also reassured us that there is always funding available to establish a company, even in times of recession. Marilise Saghbini spoke on behalf of Make Your Mark, a national campaign to increase entrepreneurial spirit in the UK. Marilise highlighted the
fantastic work Make Your Mark is doing to encourage women’s enterprise particularly through the global network, Unleashing Ideas.

Priya Lakhami, originally a legal professional, is a living testament to the importance of networks such as Make Your Mark and the claim that funding is still available. Priya truly inspired us with her passion and entrepreneurial spirit to drive her newly established company Masala Masala to success within just 6 months! Masala Masala is not just a fresh curry sauce brand, but also a Trust based in Mumbai that will provide a meal to a homeless person for every unit of product sold! Although there is much doom and gloom with the current recession, Priya assured us that this is a great time for a start-up to make some great deals, considering her experiences establishing Masala Masala in autumn last year!

I found it particularly interesting, how Angela Eagle commended women for their understanding and influence in promoting sustainability in our economies by comparison to the traditional male economic structures. She did suggest she was making a sweeping generalisation but is a strong believer that women have played a key role in implementing this holistic approach to economics. The 21st century has witnessed the internalisation of externalities, particularly regarding resources and pollution, as well as the increase in female economic power. Is this a coincidence or have women in fact influenced their male counterparts to look towards sustainable living? This is almost impossible to answer but I am
happy to accept praise on behalf of our predecessors!

Although a certain level of obscure discrimination against women within enterprises does still exist, it is without doubt that the female presence across the economy continues to advance and strengthen across all sectors. I do believe this underlying level of discrimination acts almost as a driver which motivates women to become independent and establish their own enterprises and is therefore somewhat good. It’s the means to an end, as such. It is also through strong and active networking that we continue to learn and progress.

The U.K appears to be particularly aware of the importance and value of women in enterprise, considering the support groups, funding and equality acts in place, but how are other countries working to promote female entrepreneurship? What can the U.K learn from other countries?

In the words of Priya and Angela respectively, “Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them!” also “Good Luck, aim high and stay in touch with everyone”!

Perhaps I’m a little late to catch on to this advertisement, but I had to share!

Wilkinson Sword launched this advertising campaign (“Fight for Kisses”) in September 2007 and it is utterly brilliant! Leaving aside any analysis of the “violent manner” of the advert, when taken light heartedly - it’s different, funny and effective - truly excellent marketing!

Perhaps I missed it because I was living in Germany at the time - Was this a success? Did it get much coverage, press? I’d be really interested to know the outcome of this campaign!

Enjoy the video!

Lets get ready to tumblllle….

It’s been too long since my last post, a whole month actually! Now, I could use the excuse of being “too busy” but I don’t think that’s good enough to cover my tracks for a month! I promise, I shall make up for it!

To begin the “June Bloom” on neev.us, here’s a wee synopsis to catch you up on my latest activities (i.e. outside of work at Velstone) over the last month…. (this could take a while!!).

  • AperiTWeat 2.0 took place at Al Volo again and was yet another roaring success. I am still dreaming of the delicious surprise pasta dishes they made for us! We are currently editing the video footage of the night and concocting a plan for AperiTWeat 3.0! We’re also hoping the NYC AperiTWeat team will be ready for the next one.
  • I recently joined the EYP London team as an events co-ordinator and am honoured to be a part of it. I also manage some of their social media communication and P.R. They’re a great bunch of active entrepreneurial spirits and have established a fantastic network of young professionals in London, Dublin and Bangkok!
  • I have also been lucky enough to become a member of the Sandbox Network - A global network of young inspirational talents who connect to exchange ideas and create both professional and non-professional relationships. The recent dinner in London saw 20+ international talents connecting over tasty Moroccon cuisine at the beautiful Kenza restaurant. I have already developed some strong friendships, excellent advice and motivation through Sandbox and its members.
  • I just arrived back, from a very active “vacation” to California to see Dave. Despite having brought the British weather with me, it truly was a fantastic trip. Meeting Daves incredibly welcoming and vibrant family, discovering the Persian customs and language, as well as indulging in delicious persian cuisine (It was complusory, I simply had to indulge!) were only a few of the many highlights of the trip. We also flew from Orange County to San Francisco to celebrate our friend Bianca’s sweet 24th, dressed up to the nines and went to the races and spent some short but quality time with my little cousins and their mom, my very kind Aunt and Godmother! Before leaving S.F my uncle gave us a tour of his Fire Department in China town and took us for a spin in the firetruck. (You may laugh but one is never too old to be excited about a firetruck!!). We then made our way to L.A and chilled out there in true californian style for a few days before dashing home to London, only to be greeted with the same lovely grey clouds that I brought with me to Cali! Luckily my energetic sister and her friend came over for the weekend to prevent Jet Lag from getting the better of me!

After having a very busy month of May, I’m looking forward to an even busier month of June. Hopefully not just socially but also professionally!

A few things to look forward to in June:

  1. Velstone featuring in a final year students design at the London Metropolitan Graduate Design Show (this week!)
  2. ApreiTWeat 3.0 (London, Mumbai & NYC)
  3. EYP London events

    - Women in Enterprise Seminar at the London Apple HQ (June 17th)

    - Networking at Zebrano (June 17th)

    - Cocktail Lessons at Boujis (June 24th)

  4. London #Tweam blogging
  5. Lovebox’s campaign for WWF-UK
  6. Lots more blogging from me! ;-)

Have a blooming June!

Aquaduct: Mobile Filtration Vehicle
I first seen a video of this very nifty Bicycle some time last year and was so impressed by it, that I told pretty much everyone I met, for the following two months or so, about it! I absolutely love the simplicity & practicality of it! The Aquaduct is an ideal solution to filtering and transporting water in areas where clean water is not readily available! Something which we all take for granted!
Considering how excited I was about the video of it, you can only imagine what I was like yesterday when I took this photo at the Design Museum in London. I didnt expect it to be there at all and was super (some might say “overly”) enthused when I seen it! lol I just wish I could have taken it for a spin!
I thought, if i get this excited about this bike, I definitely need to share it with others. So here’s a video demo of it, feel free to spread the good word about Aquaduct!

AperiTWeat - A tasty networking experience #aptw

AperiTWeat

I’m really excited to introduce you to AperiTWeat - a new event in the London social calender, which is based around the concept of the Italian Aperitivo. The idea is to meet twitter friends offline in an informal environment, over a few drinks and some tasty FREE italian food.

A few weeks ago, I met some friends I know through EYP and Twitter for a brainstorming session. We each share a passion for both food and networking (as well as many other things) and discussed how numerous networking events we’ve attended in London often lack the tasty presence of food! From this AperiTWeat was born (Aperitivo+TWitter+eat = AperiTWeat). I’m really excited to be collaborating with my Italian friends Carmen, Gioias, Laura, Julius and Matteo in launching AperiTWeat in London. We began hyping up the idea on twitter a few weeks ago only to be stunned at the huge reponse to the event. It appears we aren’t the only hungry networkers out there! With that in mind AperiTWeat India is also launching in Mumbai and who knows where next!

Launch Night takes place in London at al Volo on April 15th, 2009 - 6.30pm.

If you fancy joining in in the festivities please RSVP (for twitter users). If you are not a member of twitter and would like to attend, then simply send me an email at niamhhughes2@gmail.com

Click to check out our website for further details or follow us on Twitter

Looking forward to meeting you there! Buon Appetito
